Johara Dance

(jewel in Arabic, salute in Sanskrit)

Johara Dance is a unique dance company, specialising in Contemporary East/West Fusion. This dance style is based on a mix of middle-eastern and western contemporary dance, with elements of other styles carefully integrated for individual dances. In our shows you may glimpse more than a hint of Tango, African Dance, Flamenco, Bollywood, Gypsy, Burlesque and much more. Each show is different and uses movement structures appropriate to the subject.

Johara Dance is a company of five soloists and an ensemble of ten dancers. We come in all shapes, sizes and colours, as we should! We also love to perform unusual and exciting choreography, and to push the boundaries of what it is possible to express and what stories we can tell using dance styles from around the globe. Between us we represent women from many different backgrounds, and we embrace our differences as well as our shared experience. Our previous shows were ‘Elemental’, based on the four elements, and ‘Hoochie Coochie Girls’, about the experiences of outcasts and those on the fringes of society. Our new show tells a story with some very juicy female characters in it!

All company members have an in-depth training in Contemporary middle-eastern and East/West fusion dance and they also bring to the company individual knowledge of Spanish, African, Indian, Latin and Gypsy dance. Johara Dance’s repertoire ranges from the highly dramatic to witty and light-hearted.
